Según el periódico New York Times el Departamento de Defensa de E.U. destinó 22 millones en un programa secreto de investigación de ovnis. El Pentágono ha llevado años financiando el programa. El mismo fue cerrado en el 2012, tras cinco años de existencia, por entenderse en ese momento que había asuntos de mayor prioridad. Este programa realizó entrevistas y se analizaron vídeos relativos a este tema.
Luis Elizondo, ex oficial de inteligencia y antiguo líder del programa, lo dirigió en un período entre el 2007 al 2012. su equipo investigaba ovnis y supuestas pruebas de vida alienígena. Elizondo señaló que estos avistamientos mayormente ocurrían cercanos a instalaciones nucleares y centrales eléctricas. Este declaró que nunca hubo muestras de hostilidad, pero su forma de maniobrar era algo incapaz de realizar en nuestra actualidad por lo que generó inseguridad e inquietud de que algo podría pasar.

Sucesos recientes y su repercusión en la seguridad nacional de E.U.
En la actualidad han registrado un aumento de avistamientos de ovnis en E.U. Esta situación provoca que los oficiales defendieran la implantación de nuevas directrices porque temen que sean un riesgo a la seguridad militar. La armada de E. U. decidió establecer un nuevo protocolo de registro. Todavía están trabajando en las directrices que deberán obedecer los pilotos y otros profesionales cuando observen estos fenómenos inexplicables. Por lo que se deja atrás el ignorar estas incursiones y el no investigarlas en forma exhaustiva.

El fenómeno ovni ha generado varias controversias desde hace varias décadas. Las ambivalencias del gobierno ante el tema ha generado inseguridad en la ciudadanía. A su vez crea una falta de credibilidad en sus instituciones dirigidas a la protección y seguridad. Es por lo tanto necesario que se permita abrir los expedientes que aún permanecen cerrados supuestamente por alegada seguridad nacional. El caos puede emerger por la secretividad y falta de orientación objetiva sobre este fenómeno.
