They claimed to have confronted the animal in a Tanzanian fishing village in where he beheaded several people. In 1954, Patric Bomen, discovers the footprints of the Mngwa as identical to those of a leopard, but much larger. This mythical animal is present in indigenous folklore since the 12th century, where it is mentioned in a poem that states: “I went inside the forest to be devoured there by the strange animal. ”

The Legend of the Mngwa

Descripción del mítico felino conocido como Mngwa o Nunda

Este misterioso animal logró sembrar bastantes problemas en las costas de Tanzania, antiguo Tanganika. Su nombre significa: ” el animal extraño” o “el extraño”.
Es descrito como parecido a la pantera, pero del tamaño de un león y el cual tiene costumbres antropófogas (se alimenta de carne humana). Sus característica física principal es una piel rayada parecida al tigre, pero sus colores son menos resplandecientes. Al mirarlo de lejos parece tener un sólo color.

Algo de historia sobre el mítico felino

Los primeros testimonios que alegan haberlo visto datan del siglo XX por parte de unos colonos británicos en el 1922. Alegaron haberse enfrentado al animal en un poblado de pescadores de Tanzania en donde degolló a varias personas.

En 1938, William Hichens, declaró en publicación científica “Discovery” que varios indígenas fueron atacados por el Mngwa. En 1954, Patric Bomen, descubre las huellas del Mngwa como idénticas a las de un leopardo, pero mucho más grandes.

Este mítico animal está presente en el folklore indígena desde el siglo XII, donde se menciona en un poema que declara: “Me adentro en el bosque para ser devorado allí por el animal extraño”.

La leyenda del Mngwa

Según cuentan el Sultán Majnun poseía un extraño gato, el cual se escapó un día y comenzó a matar pollos. Todos los hombres que trabajaban para el Sultán intentaron encontrarlo, pero sin éxito. El animal la emprendió contra animales de incluso mayor tamaño tales como ovejas y cabras. Finalmente el sultán se  desesperó y declaró que no era un simple gato, que era un Nunda, un “extraño” que él había capturado tiempo atrás. Es entonces que decide que lo maten. El hijo del Sultán Manjun se ofreció para ayudar a su padre y matar a tan devastador depredador, y siguiendo las indicaciones y las descripciones del animal mató un perro, una civeta, una cebra, una jirafa, un rinoceronte y un elefante, antes de conseguir dar con el misterioso asesino.

Cuando por fin lo consiguió, exclamó “Este debe ser el Nunda” “Según me dijeron las orejas de este animal son pequeñas y las de este lo son, también me dijeron que era más ancho que largo y este animal lo es, me dijeron que su pelaje y manchas son similares a las de las civetas, y el de este animal lo es, por último, me dijeron que su cola era gruesa, y la cola de este animal lo es, todas las particularidades descritas están en este animal”. En efecto el animal  que fue muerto a manos del hijo del Sultán era el Nunda. El hijo del Sultán heredó el reino y se dice que gobernó con justicia por muchos años.

Conclusión

El misterio del Mngwa ha aterrorizado a los africanos por miles de años. Hay quienes piensan que es alguna especie desconocida de gato enorme y posiblemente relacionada a la especie de los leopardos. Otros piensan o prefieren la idea de la leyenda sobre el mítico felino.

La realidad  es que nadie ha logrado cazar a ninguno de éstos. Por lo que no existen pruebas contundentes de su existencia. Es todavía un misterio lo que  hace que se mantenga la leyenda del Mngwa.
