The creature known as Mokéle-mbémbé is a kind of prehistoric monster that is said to have lived in a lake. It is very difficult for such a large animal to hide in a forest or lake. However, cryptozoologists insist that they could exist in Africa because it is unchanged. La criatura conocida como Mokéle-mbémbé es una especie de monstruo prehistórico que se dice que vivía en un lago. En 1981, Herman Regusters, ingeniero aeroespacial de la NASA, conoce sobre esta historia y decide viajar a una parte de África, que pertenece al Congo, en busca de esta criatura. Se dice que se parecía mucho a un saurópodo, dinosaurio de cuello largo. Intentó sin éxito que el Departamento de Defensa de E.U. le financiara su viaje e investigación argumentando que podría crear mapas de la región. Por lo que se pagó su viaje con ayuda de donaciones privadas.

Fue acompañado de su esposa y un equipo de lugareños hacia el remoto lago Tele. Al igual que otros investigadores regresó solamente con unas pocas anécdotas que pudo compartir en sus escritos y charlas. Alegó que había presenciado avistamientos, pero no poseía ni videos, ni fotos  que lo corroboraran. Inclusive, afirmó que en una ocasión lo vio todo el equipo excepto el fotógrafo. El viaje fue algo tortuoso. Asediados por abejas, caminando por ciénagas y soportando las inclemencias del tiempo. Los rumores sobre la existencia de Mokéle-mbémbé datan de principios del siglo XX. Estos provenían de los visitantes de nacionalidad francesa y alemana que escucharon cuentos de la gente del lugar sobre un gran monstruo que vivía en el bosque. Se decía que comia elefantes, otros que tenia cabeza de serpiente. Según Paul Barret, paleontólogo del Museo de Historia Nacional de Londres, es imposible que exista tal criatura sin el conocimiento de los humanos. Alega que no hay evidencia de registro fósil en los últimos 66 millones de años de nada que se parezca a un saurópodo. Darren Naish, científico y paleontólogo, está de acuerdo con Paul Barret. Barret piensa que son viejas historias que han ido pasando por generaciones como vestigios de advertencias a los hijos para evitar que se ahogaran.

 

Conclusión

Tal vez solamente sea una leyenda como tantas otras y que han cautivado tanto a sus habitantes como al que los visita. Lo cierto es que no existe ninguna evidencia que demuestre de forma contundente su existencia. De acuerdo a paleontólogos los grandes animales no vivían en lagos si no en tierra firme.  Necesitan grandes poblaciones para subsistir, además de grandes extensiones geográficas para colmar sus necesidades alimentarias. Es muy difícil que un animal tan grande pueda ocultarse en un bosque o lago. No obstante, los criptozoólogos insisten en que podrían existir en África porque esta inalterada. Ahora bien, los mitos resultan interesantes y cualquier expedición a lo desconocido nos puede llevar a descubrir cosas interesantes.
