Meditation, for those who have it as part of their lifestyle, is a practice of improvement and recovery. Through practice, they can relax, encourage concentration, stimulate attention, be more productive and even recover their energies. This skill transcends its religious origin and is used by many because of the mental and physical benefits it provides. On the other hand, there are some alleged consequences or effects that can be considered paranormal.

A practitioner of meditation (a person who is dedicated to it) can spend an hour and a half exclusively to meditation. For an initiate, meditating for only 10 minutes can seem overwhelming because being still and concentrating on the posture is difficult to achieve in a restless mind. When he acquires skill, the practitioner gradually becomes accustomed and can extend the time of meditation. On that path, many experience strange effects on their body and their lives. This can leads them to experience what siddhis can be.

What are the siddhis?

The siddhis are states or effects that manifest themselves when the spiritual growth is high. They are described as perfections achieved in the spiritual path and, although the siddhis described in conventional practice do not present any supernatural effect, some shamans and occultists describe siddhis as supernormal states that range from passing through a solid to levitating and teleporting at will.

Among the siddhis or possible psychic powers are:

  • Supernatural force
  • Know the inner and outer universe
  • Know the past and future present
  • Do not suffer from hunger or thirst
  • Levitation
  • Feeling light and very heavy
  • Control elements of matter
  • Know everything knowable
  • Die at will
  • Telepathy
  • Telekinesis
  • Teleportation
  • The vision of interdimensional beings
  • Clairvoyance

The list goes on with a little less than thirty alleged supernatural powers. The practice of meditation that is used to develop these siddhis is very similar to that of concentration. Objects are used to direct attention. Then the object is removed and the mental image of it is used. Note that we know fantastic stories about these abilities and if we study history is attributed to persons usually related to spiritual development such as saints, shamans, monks, etc.

Perfections or Distractions

In several texts, people who have reached this state are described. However, the overwhelming evidence that we could find about these powers is diminished by the very nature of these. If any person who possesses these siddhis publicly performs them or for their own benefit, he will lose or greatly delay the spiritual progress achieved. That is, he loses the gifts and may not recover them.

The siddhis are not attained only through meditation. It is said that they can be acquired by inheritance, through the consumption of certain herbs, with the recitation of mantras, synchronicity with some spiritual figure and, as we already know, through meditation. With the exception of meditation, the other possible methods for experiencing siddhis are not recognized as virtuous but as a temporary manifestation.

While we have been able to know, these faculties mark the perfection of spiritual development. We must add that these effects also present a distraction in this way. Power can blur the purpose of the practice itself. The acquisition of siddhis may manifest a certain spiritual materialism in the person who is seduced by miracles.

Conclusions

In our research on the paranormal, the concept of siddhis can help explain various paranormal abilities and events. Nonetheless, the possibility of these psychic abilities as maximum endowments in the spiritual development of the human being remains in the reader’s criterion.
