Robert the Doll- the real story that inspired “Chucky”

How many times have you dreamed about Chucky?
Sometimes, movies take inspiration from real-life stories. This is not so credible when we see paranormal experiences that we often tend to relate to fantastic stories. What is particularly scary about the well known Chucky character is that the killer toy was inspired on a real toy with more than 100 years of history.
A boy and his doll…
According to history the doll was manufactured by the Steiff Company of Germany and sold to the grandfather of the first owner of the doll in 1904. It was gifted as a birthday present to Robert Eugene Otto in Key West. It’s thought that the clothes the toy have were an outfit that Eugene has worn as a child. Another legend says that was a voodoo doll gifted as retaliation to the family.
The boy was always with his doll and named it Robert while he stayed as “Gene”. They become “best friends” as the boy grew up. When Gene misbehaved, he shifted the blame to the doll telling that he didn’t do it, the doll was.
Gene grew up to become a prominent artist in Florida. He studied Art on New York and Paris while the doll remained in his family at 534 Eaton Street in Key West. Later he married Annette Parker in Paris on May 3, 1930. Then he moved with his wife to his parent’s house until his death in 1974. His wife died two years later.
The enchanted doll…
The doll is thought to move, change its expressions and make sounds. Legends claim that Eugene triggered those supernatural powers while he constantly shifted the blame for his misbehavior. The neighbors claimed to saw Robert the Doll moving behind the windows. Others say that when Eugene and Annette died, Robert constantly disappeared from the house.
The house with the doll was sold to Myrtle Reuter who owned it for six years. Myrtle kept Robert when he moved to Von Phister Street and the Otto house turned into a guest house. 20 years later Myrtle gave Robert to Fort East Mortello Museum where it has remained claiming that the doll moved around the house and that was enchanted. Myrtle died a few months later.

As the people knew about the new location of Robert, they started to visit the Museum even when the doll wasn’t displayed at first. The people of the Museum claims that cameras and electronics don’t work well near Robert’s presence. Many letters are constantly delivered to the museum apologizing for disrespectful behavior and seeking forgiveness. Apparently, the visitor who disrespects Robert tends to have post-visit misfortunes. According to folklore, Robert has caused car accidents, divorce, job loss, broken bones, and many other misfortunes. Robert is annually rotated to The Customs House and Old Post Office in Kelly West in October.
Robert the Doll has become the inspiration for many horror movies based on its legend. In 2015, a film named Robert was released followed by The Curse of Robert the Doll (2016), The Toymaker (2017) and the Revenge of Robert the Doll (2018).
Conclusions
This is not the first (neither the last) last case that we will know about haunted dolls. Many people claim to have experiences with toys and other objects. Some say that these objects may be a channel for other entities to interact with our world.
